With this concert, we start a new series of events at an unusual hour: “Late Night” at the Philharmonie. Directly following a concert by the Berliner Philharmoniker, the music continues – with exciting musical programmes. The opening event is a concert of nuanced diversity with Sir Simon Rattle, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and the orchestra’s trombonist Olaf Ott. 

Luigi Dallapiccola’s Piccola musica notturna in particular creates a nocturnal mood. The title – which in translation means nothing other than “Little Night Music” – is obviously a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Mozart. But unlike Mozart, Dallapiccola’s poetic work really captures the atmosphere and the sounds of the night. The morning also has its place in this programme, namely, in Manuel de Falla’s impressionist vocal scene Psyché, which depicts a general awakening in spring. 

In the second vocal contribution of the concert – Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs – we encounter all of life itself in all its variety. In this cycle, Berio brings together eleven songs from eight countries: a compressed journey through the most different musical and emotional worlds. We experience a similar concentrated diversity in Berio’s Sequenza V for solo trombone, in which the sound of the trombone is presented in all shades, sometimes creating what appear to be almost unreal, electronic sounds.
