Tugan Sokhiev and Nikolai Lugansky

Russian music should be melancholy and voluminous – or at least that’s the cliché. Tugan Sokhiev, Music Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, provides proof of the contrary. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade develops oriental magic and impressionist richness of colour, while a tongue in cheek charm repeatedly shines through in Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody, regardless of its tremendous virtuosity. Nikolai Lugansky debuts as piano soloist with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
