2 concert with Nikolaus Harnoncourt
A Beethoven evening with Nikolaus Harnoncourt
This Beethoven evening from October 2011 marks Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s final guest appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker – the end of an exceptionally happy and fruitful collaboration which had begun in 1991. The concert demonstrates the undiminished vitality of this partnership with a rousing interpretation of the Fifth Symphony, which for Simon Rattle amounted to the “effect of a volcanic eruption”.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts Haydn’s “Orlando paladino”
Nikolaus Harnoncourt called Haydn’s Orlando paladino a “totally mad, modern opera” and praised the “combination of pathos and irony, of real feelings and completely overwrought wooing”, which is “carried to extremes in Haydn’s inspired interpretation”. In this recording from 2009, Harnoncourt conducts the work with an outstanding ensemble of soloists, headed by Jane Archibald, Jonathan Lemalu, Kurt Streit and Michelle Breedt.
