In this concert with Paavo Järvi, we experience sensuously delicate tonal beauty, composed by two pioneers of Modernism. Anton Webern’s richly coloured arrangement of a ricercare by Bach is followed by Alban Berg’s Seven Early Songs (soloist: Mojca Erdmann), which capture the tender mood of young love. Bruckner’s Second Symphony concludes the programme – an early work which already has unmistakable Brucknerian power.

Witold Lutosławski’s captivating Concerto for Orchestra combines the acerbic power of traditional Polish folk music with ingenious, pioneering construction. A charming contrast is formed by Johannes Brahms’ joyous Second Symphony, written during a holiday at the Wörthersee in which, according to the composer, “The melodies fly so thick here that you have to be careful not to step on one”. The conductor for this concert is Paavo Järvi.

“The first notes of Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto rarely shine simultaneously as clearly and as focused as with Lisa Batiashvili,” was what Bayerischer Rundfunk said in its review. The Georgian violinist, who in this concert stands in for the indisposed Janine Jansen, presents the darkly timbred work, whose free, rhapsodic form requires most creative of skills. Paavo Järvi also conducts Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony, which reflects the horrors of the Stalin era with brooding resignation and grotesque savagery.

An architectural gem is the venue for this European Concert: the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, one of the few originally preserved theatrical buildings of the Baroque. Paavo Järvi, who has caused a sensation particularly for his interpretations of Beethoven, conducts the composer’s Fourth Symphony, and of course Richard Wagner could not be missed out in a Bayreuth concert either. The soloist in his Wesendonck Lieder is Eva-Maria Westbroek.

Yuja Wang debuts with the Berliner Philharmoniker

This performance had been eagerly anticipated: In May 2015, the Chinese pianist Yuja Wang made her first appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker, playing Sergei Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, one of the most difficult pieces of the repertoire. Conductor Paavo Järvi also performs Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Symphony – a masterstroke by the 19-year-old!

This concert with Paavo Järvi offers many fresh perspectives. Beethoven’s First Symphony sounds as bright and new as if the composer had just written it. Järvi also presents Paul Hindemith’s somewhat neglected Violin Concerto, whose appeal lies in its originality and a dark, Romantic tone. Frank Peter Zimmermann is ideally matched for the sometimes swirling, sometimes rapturous solo part.
