Wolfgang Rihm in conversation with Winrich Hopp (18 min.)

The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of the English conductor Daniel Harding opened Musikfest Berlin 2016 with Wolfgang Rihm’s monumental composition Tutuguri, which was originally conceived as dance music for Deutsche Oper in Berlin. More than 30 years after its premiere, the composer Wolfgang Rihm, in an interview with Winrich Hopp, the festival’s artistic director, looks back on his early masterpiece, inspired by an eponymous poem by French writer Atonin Artaud. Topics of discussion include the relationship between inspiration and reflection, and the dramaturgy of the work whose final section consists exclusively of a group of percussionists.
