Jonathan Nott

Jonathan Nott, who has worked in Paris as well as in Lucerne, Berlin and Vienna, is known for his energetic and clear interpretations. He is very familiar with the Classical-Romantic repertoire as well as with new music – he led the Ensemble Intercontemporain founded by Pierre Boulez for several years. As part of the “Ligeti Project”, he recorded all of György Ligeti’s orchestral works on CD with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the express wish of the composer.
Jonathan Nott studied music theory and composition at Cambridge University, flute and voice at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and conducting at the National Opera Studio in London. After initial engagements at Oper Frankfurt and the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, he took over the musical direction of the theatre and symphony orchestra in Lucerne in 1997. For 16 years he was chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, with whom he recorded all Schubert and Mahler symphonies on CD. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Nott became principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie as well as music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. In January 2017, he also took up his post as chief conductor and music director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. Jonathan Nott, a recipient of the Ring of Honour of the City of Bamberg and the Bavarian Order of Merit, has worked in recent years with almost all the major symphony orchestras in Europe and the USA, including the philharmonic orchestras in Berlin, Vienna and Munich, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the major orchestras in Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.
