From Brazil to China: Classical works inspired by other sound worlds
This playlist shows how fascinating it sounds when Mozart composed in Turkish, Ravel in Spanish, Brahms in Hungarian and Heitor Villa-Lobos à la Bach. Puccini’s operatic vision of China is not the only case where the musical adaptation is not always based on a familiarity with the “other” culture it wants to represent, but these interpretations do show the richness of sounds and atmospheric diversity that can be achieved by looking beyond one’s own musical horizons.
