Sound – or rather, the search for new sounds – is at the heart of Helmut Lachenmann’s work. For him, composing means creating an instrument, and in doing so, “removing the existing means of sound production from their familiar context and placing them in a new one”. As one of the leading contemporary German composers, Lachenmann developed his “musique concrète instrumentale” at an early stage; this is realised through a multitude of unconventional playing techniques – which is why, in a sense, one can speak of a reinvention of the use of instruments.
