Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Alberich in Der Ring at Bayerische Staatsoper, Wotan in Bayreuth, Hans Sachs at the Royal Opera House in London and Barak in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten with the Berliner Philharmoniker and at Vienna State Opera: Wolfgang Koch sings all the major roles in his fach, although he is still best known as a Wagner specialist. “I am very versatile,” he says, “I just don’t sing French roles because I don’t speak the language.” In addition to his opera career, Wolfgang Koch, who was appointed Bavarian Kammersänger in 2015, is also a sought-after concert singer and a regular guest on the world’s leading stages. He made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1996 in a concert performance of Berg’s Wozzeck conducted by Claudio Abbado.
