David Zinman, who served for many years as chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, has worked with all the world’s leading orchestras. His recording of Henryk Mikołaj Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs with the soprano Dawn Upshaw was a phenomenal success in 1992, with the CD even spending several weeks in the pop charts. Zinman’s recording of all Beethoven’s symphonies – based on a new critical edition and using Beethoven’s original metronome markings – also caused a sensation and was awarded the German Record Critics’ Award. Since his first appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in early June 1985, Zinman has conducted the orchestra on numerous occasions.
