The famous dictum that Johannes Brahms’s Violin Concerto is a concerto “against the violin” is attributed to Hans von Bülow – simply because the work gives the soloist little opportunity for virtuoso showmanship. In a concert from February 2012, soloist Guy Braunstein, the Berliner Philharmoniker and conductor Andris Nelsons set about unveiling the obvious as well as the hidden charms of this concerto. For many years, Guy Braunstein was a familiar face to audiences of the Berliner Philharmoniker since becoming 1st concertmaster in 2000. You can get to know him better in our interval feature.
