Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts Schubert

“Schubert is the composer closest to my heart,” Nikolaus Harnoncourt once said. Between 2003 and 2006, he recorded Schubert’s eight symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker – from the much-underrated early works to the Unfinished and the Great in C major. This Schubert is colourful and dramatic – and embodies a unique synthesis which allows both the Philharmoniker’s famous sound and Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s familiarity with the transparency and tonal language of historical performance practice to unfold.
