Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphonies 8–10 with Kirill Petrenko

Kirill Petrenko describes Dmitri Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony as an “incredible psychological drama”. The composer wrote it during the Second World War at great personal risk, caught between the threat to his very existence and Stalinist censorship. The Ninth and Tenth Symphonies also bear powerful witness to Shostakovich’s clash with the regime – and his determination to assert himself. Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings released the recordings of Symphonies Nos. 8–10 as the orchestra’s second major edition with chief conductor Kirill Petrenko.
