Daniel Barenboim conversa con Emmanuel Pahud (13 min)

After Daniel Barenboim conducted Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the 2014 European Concert, another work by the Russian composer was programmed for his next concert with the orchestra in June 2015: With the “Pathétique”, Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final contribution to the genre of the symphony was played. Barenboim’s particular affinity to this music is not only due to his own Russian ancestors; he was also influenced by the legendary Yevgeny Mravinsky. In this interview with the Philharmoniker’s principal flute Emmanuel Pahud, Barenboim also talks about the biographical elements in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony, his memories of Wilhelm Furtwängler, and about his work with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
