Kirill Petrenko conducts Brahms

For his reading of Brahms’s symphonies, Kirill Petrenko returns to their roots – and to his own: in Meiningen. This is where Hans von Bülow first performed Brahms’s works, before Fritz Steinbach succeeded him as court kapellmeister in 1886. Thanks to Brahms’s regular visits to Meiningen, Steinbach became very familiar with his music – and noted the composer’s wishes in the scores. Kirill Petrenko’s performance of the First Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker is characterised in particular by the detailed, variable tempo markings. The Tragic Overture completes the edition.
