Marie Jacquot in conversation with Oliver Hilmes (7 min.)
After a position in Würzburg, the French conductor Marie Jacquot became Kapellmeister at Deutsche Oper am Rhein for the 2019/20 season. She was involved in the world premiere of Miroslav Srnka’s opera South Pole at Bayerische Staatsoper as Kirill Petrenko’s assistant. The musician celebrated her Philharmoniker debut in February 2021, when she conducted a Karajan Academy concert with works by Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler as part of the online festival “The Golden Twenties”. In conversation with Oliver Hilmes, she explains the astonishing stylistic transformation Kurt Weill underwent between his Violin Concerto, composed in Berlin in 1924, and the Second Symphony, which was written partly when he was in exile. Another topic of conversation is the early sound film Kuhle Wampe, for which Bertolt Brecht drafted the screenplay and Hanns Eisler wrote the music. A suite from this film music opened the concert of the online festival.
