As a child in Latvia, Pēteris Vasks experienced the state-sponsored terror of the Soviet central government – with mass deportations and forced resettlements as part of the “Russification” of the Baltic states. As a composer, he embraced a humane and religious ethos in his works from an early age: “I regard compassion for the suffering of the world as the starting point for my creative work. I have always dreamt that my music – comforting and questioning – would be heard wherever unhappy people are to be found.” His frequently performed Musica dolorosa for string orchestra was composed in 1983 as a requiem following the loss of his sister.
