Andreas Blau, whose father was also a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, took the position of principal flutist with the orchestra at the age of 20 after brief studies. After Karajan and Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle is now the third principal conductor he has experienced in his orchestra career. After 45 years, Blau – in the opinion of the Berliner Zeitung “one of the world’s best flutists, and perhaps the very best orchestral flutist” – ended his career with the Berliner Philharmoniker in the 2013-14 season. In honour of this occasion, he performed as soloist in March 2014 in Carl Reinecke’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D major. In our bonus film, the musician chats with his colleague, principal flutist Emmanuel Pahud, about his career with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
