In June 2016, there was a belated, but for that all the more rewarding encounter between the Berliner Philharmoniker and Betsy Jolas. After Sir Simon Rattle got to know the composer, born in 1926, and her music, he commissioned a new work from her which was given its premiere by the Philharmoniker. In a previous Late Night concert, Rattle performed two pieces by the French composer for Viola and Piano together with Máté Szűcs. In her long career, Jolas has not been swayed by any musical fashions and has developed a distinctive style, strongly influenced by song. The both charming and witty artist can be seen here in conversation with Fergus McWilliam, horn player with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
