With her flexible, slender but darkly timbred mezzo-soprano, Joyce DiDonato has already delighted audiences at the Philharmonie on several occasions. Now she is the star guest at Sir Simon Rattle’s side during the New Year’s Eve Concert, singing Richard Strauss’s lavishly beautiful orchestral songs. The programme also includes works by Dvořák, Stravinsky, Bernstein and Shostakovich – full of virtuosity, gracefulness and humour.

Hector Berlioz’s cantata La Mort de Cléopâtre is a highly concentrated drama of sometimes delicate, sometimes overwhelming expressiveness. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato sang the work in June 2017 and was acclaimed by the audience for her powerful stage presence. Conductor Ludovic Morlot also presented Maurice Ravel’s charming suite Ma Mère l’Oye and Igor Stravinsky’s pioneering ballet music The Firebird.

La Damnation de Faust is less about the philosophical dimension of the material than about passion, conflicts, and of course the protagonist’s dramatic damnation. With this work, the magician of sound Hector Berlioz created an evocative, imaginary opera, interpreted in our concert by Simon Rattle and two outstanding American singers: Joyce DiDonato as Marguerite and Charles Castronovo as Faust. The role of Mephisto is sung by Ludovic Tézier.
