Alan Gilbert on his work as a conductor and musician (15 min.)
When artists cancel an appearance, it is normally for unfortunate reasons. Not so in the case of Gustavo Dudamel, who was to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker on 1 April 2011, but had to cancel due to a happy event: the birth of his son two days before. Instead, Alan Gilbert conducted with the pianist Emanuel Ax and mezzo-soprano Chrstianne Stotijn at his side. However, the very effusive reviews show that this performance was anything other than a less-than-ideal solution. Our interval feature gives you the opportunity to become better acquainted with this evening’s conductor.
