Valery Gergiev in conversation with Matthew Hunter (17 min.)

In February 2015, the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev returned as a guest to the Philharmonie in Berlin to present Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto with soloist Hélène Grimaud and Sergei Prokofiev’s rarely heard Sixth Symphony. On the occasion of this performance, the artist spoke to Matthew Hunter, viola player with the Philharmoniker, about, among other things, the world-famous St Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre, where Gergiev has been artistic director and chief conductor since 1988. They also discuss the repertoire of the conductor, who is equally passionate about both Russian and German music, and in recent years conducted a much acclaimed production of Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen.
