Sir Simon Rattle on the 2016 New Year’s Concert (2 min.)
Among the unmissable dates in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s calendar is the New Year’s Eve Concert, an event that has been televised since 1977. For the 2016 concert, the orchestra under the baton of its chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle prepared a musical feast for the public of rare and popular works: In addition to an overture by the Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky and orchestral pieces from William Walton’s musical satire Façade, there was also a selection of Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances. Plus, in Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, the renowned young Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov celebrated his eagerly awaited debut with the orchestra. In this introduction, Sir Simon Rattle gives a detailed presentation of the programme selection.
