Diana Damrau in conversation with Albrecht Mayer (5 min.)
The soprano Diana Damrau has enjoyed worldwide success in works by Mozart, in Italian bel canto and in operas by Richard Strauss, among others. She has worked with Kirill Petrenko on many occasions, such as at her first appearance at the New York Metropolitan Opera and several times at Bayerische Staatsoper. In his first season as chief conductor, Damrau finally made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the 2019 New Year’s Eve concert, performing songs from the world of American musicals. In this interview with the Philharmoniker’s principal oboe Albrecht Mayer, Damrau explains the vocal requirements of this genre, which differ markedly from singing in opera. The soprano also talks about her close artistic partnership with Kirill Petrenko.
