Shortly before the closure of cultural institutions in Germany in November 2020, the Berliner Philharmoniker presented a concert with works by Andrew Norman, Richard Strauss and Dmitri Shostakovich as originally planned. In an interview with Philharmoniker violinist Eva-Maria Tomasi, chief conductor Kirill Petrenko talks about the densely woven structure of Strauss’ study Metamorphosen and the tonal language of Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, to which the Soviet state reacted again with hostility.
