Semyon Bychkov in conversation with Albrecht Mayer (24 min.)

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Antonín Dvořák knew each other well and held each other in high regard, both personally and artistically. Semyon Bychkov, who conducted the Russian composer’s Violin Concerto and the Czech composer’s Seventh Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker in March 2021, reads passages from letters in this interview which make the composers’ mutual admiration apparent. Bychkov, who has performed regularly with the Philharmoniker since 1985, also talks with principal oboe Albrecht Mayer about one of the great current challenges for orchestras: preserving their own sound and traditions in times of globalisation.
