The Berliner Philharmoniker have provided many highlights of the annual benefit concert of the German Federal President since it was launched in 1988: Richard von Weizsäcker, for example, head of state from 1984 to 1994, initiated the highly acclaimed Philharmoniker debut of the legendary conductor Carlos Kleiber. And in 1992, he also succeeded in persuading Sergiu Celibidache to return to the podium of the Philharmonie after an absence of 38 years. Two orchestral members, the violist Walter Küssner and the cellist Christoph Igelbrink, recall these events. The occasion was the concert by German President Joachim Gauck in March 2017, in which Zubin Mehta conducted works by Elgar and Tchaikovsky. The soloist was the world famous Israeli violinist Pinchas Zuckerman.
