Sir András Schiff

piano

There is scarcely a note in the piano works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann or Bartók that András Schiff not performed and recorded. Above all, there is hardly a score of this repertoire that the Hungarian musician has not memorised in its entirety.

Schiff is one of the pianists whose in-depth knowledge and experience enables an almost encyclopaedic mastery of major compositions from the Baroque to the age of classical Modernism. Schiff, who is also a keen chamber musician and lieder accompanist, founded his own chamber orchestra in 1999, the Capella Andrea Barca, which he performs with both as a soloist and as a conductor. Schiff, who is also admired for his personal and political integrity, has enjoyed a close artistic relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker – whose pianist in residence he was in the 2008/2009 season – since his debut with the orchestra in 1989.
