Sir Simon Rattle on Schubert’s “Winterreise” (4 min.)

Sir Simon Rattle sees Franz Schubert’s famous song cycle Winterreise as a major inspiration for later composers such as Mahler and Schoenberg. In its subjective yet sensitive treatment, Hans Zender’s adaptation of the work for voice and 24 instrumentalists brings out the latently modern aspects of Schubert’s music. In November 2014, Rattle, the tenor Christian Elsner and students of the Orchestra Academy performed Zender’s 1993 “composed interpretation”.
