Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Willard White in conversation with Sarah Willis (17 min.)
Almost every music lover can whistle at least one or two tunes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Yet very few are aware of just how much outstanding music there is in the rest of the opera alongside hits such as “Summertime” or “I got plenty o’ nuttin’”. Only a complete performance of the score can reveal the work’s emotional depth and precise characterization. And it was such a performance that the Berliner Philharmoniker and chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle gave in September 2012 in the Philharmonie. Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Willard White, this performance’s Porgy, discuss the opera with Sarah Wills, horn player with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
