Zubin Mehta named honorary member of the Berliner Philharmoniker (8 min.)
Zubin Mehta has enjoyed a uniquely long and intensive collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker. The Indian conductor, who studied together with Claudio Abbado under the master teacher Hans Swarowsky in Vienna, made his debut with the orchestra in 1961, and has returned almost every season since. As a sign of their thanks and admiration, the Philharmoniker added Mehta to the exclusive circle of their honorary members in February 2019. As part of a small ceremony, cellist and orchestra board member Knut Weber spoke of some key events of their joint concert history, then Mehta was awarded the certificate of honorary membership. The conductor was deeply moved by the award and emphasised how much he had learned from the orchestra.
