The audiovisual “Declaration of Independence” by the Berliner Philharmoniker with the Digital Concert Hall which started in 2008 was followed in 2014 by the founding of their own CD label with the name Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings. In a rapidly changing classical music market, the orchestra has set another milestone. The aim of the in-house label is to release outstanding interpretations of works of the symphonic core repertoire in the best technical quality possible. For the first recording, Sir Simon Rattle and the Philharmoniker chose Schumann’s four symphonies, which the chief conductor and his orchestra have explored intensively in recent years. On the occasion of the Philharmoniker’s cycle for the 2014 Musikfest Berlin in which the symphonies of Schumann were juxtaposed with those of Brahms, Simon Rattle and Olaf Maninger, principal cellist and director of the orchestra’s media board since 1998, talk about the new label’s current and future projects.
