Kirill Petrenko conducts Tchaikovsky’s “Mazeppa”

Like the opera Eugene Onegin, which was premiered five years earlier, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa is based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin. Against the backdrop of historical events during the reign of Peter the Great, the work tells of the tragic life and loves of a Ukrainian Cossack leader. The opera’s score, as passionate as it is dramatic, was brought to life by a top-class ensemble of singers in this concert performance at the Philharmonie Berlin.
