Dima Slobodeniouk and Yo-Yo Ma
Dima Slobodeniouk opens the programme with Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which captivates the listener at times with its elfin lightness, and at others with its radiant exuberance. Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, by contrast, strikes a sensitive and contemplative tone. Yo-Yo Ma, arguably the most renowned cellist of our time, returns to the Philharmoniker as its soloist. In his nostalgic work Locket, Composer in Residence Brett Dean quotes a theme by Clara Schumann.
