Albrecht Mayer: a portrait

A film by Sibylle Strobel

Albrecht Mayer

13 min.

Albrecht Mayer has been principal oboist with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1992; but he is also known throughout the music world as one of the outstanding representatives of his instrument. His numerous recordings regularly appear not only in the classical but also in the pop music charts. The musician plays on an oboe, the Albrecht-Mayer model, developed by himself and the instrument maker Ludwig Frank. In this film portrait, the musician is heard in concert excerpts ranging from Beethoven and the famous Oboe Concerto by Richard Strauss to a solo piece by Luciano Berio. The artist also explains why the oboe is one of the most challenging and physically demanding instruments of all, and why he never wanted to play anything else.
