Summary

Hardly any instrument of the symphony orchestra is as exposed as the trumpet, as its powerful and direct sound effortlessly reaches listener and even the smallest errors are noticeable. As a virtuoso of this instrument you have to have good nerves and the desire for challenges, as Gábor Tarkövi explains in this film. Tarkövi has held one of the two positions as principal trumpeter with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2005. Previously, he held the same position at today’s Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. The artist grew up in a Hungarian village in a family that has produced many professional musicians since the 18th century. In this portrait, he also describes how the sound of a gold or silver-finished trumpet differs, and talks about his love of folk music and Mahler’s symphonies, in which the trumpet often has a special status.
