Patricia Kopatchinskaja in conversation with Paolo Mendes (18 min.)
György Ligeti’s only violin concerto is one of the Hungarian composer’s most captivating pieces not least because of its anarchic humour. In conversation with horn player Paolo Mendes who became a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2016, the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja explains why this work is so close to her heart. In February 2017, she performed the concerto with the Philharmoniker under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. Kopatchinskaja, one of the most unconventional and fearless violinists of her generation, also speaks of her debut with the Philharmoniker two and a half years earlier when she appeared not only as the soloist in Peter Eötvös’s composition DoReMi, but also in an edition of the Late Night concerts.
