Sir Simon Rattle on Mahlers Symphony No. 8 (7 min.)
Of all Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, the Eighth is probably the least often performed – not because of any doubts regarding its quality, but because of the forces required in terms of instrumentalists and singers which only a few orchestras are in a position to meet. With such large numbers involved, the choirs stretched right up into the auditorium when the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle performed this vast work in September 2011. In this video, Sir Simon Rattle gives an introduction to the »Symphony of a Thousand«.
