30 years of Suntory Hall – Memories of musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker (7 min.)

On 30 October 1986, the Berliner Philharmoniker performed for the first time in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall which had opened a week earlier, and which has since established itself as one of the world’s most popular concert halls. The Philharmoniker have performed there numerous times on their Asian tours. The premiere concert was originally to be conducted by Herbert von Karajan. How the orchestra’s former chief conductor had to cancel due to illness, how an ideal replacement was found in Seiji Ozawa, how much the musicians felt at home in the new venue, and how Karajan eventually did appear in Suntory Hall – is related in this video made decades later by the violinist Laurentius Dinca, the oboist Andreas Wittmann and the horn player Fergus McWilliam, who participated in the performance as young orchestra members.
