Ton Koopman in conversation with Jonathan Kelly (15 min.)

In October 2017, the Berliner Philharmoniker performed Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor for the first time since 2006. The musical direction of the concert, which involved the participation of a first-class ensemble of soloists and the RIAS Kammerchor, was in the hands of the Dutch harpsichordist, organist, conductor and founder of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Ton Koopman, one of the most important and highly respected Baroque music specialists. Koopman talks to the Philharmoniker’s principal oboist Jonathan Kelly about the history of the Mass, playing Early music on modern instruments and the question of whether the Lutheran Bach actually composed a Catholic Mass in this late work.
