Kirill Petrenko in conversation with Julia Gartemann (12 min.)

Kirill Petrenkos first New Year’s Eve Concert as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker featured works by American composers, while the 2020 concert focused in particular on music associated with Spain. As a symbolic replacement for the cancelled staged production of Beethoven’s Fidelio in Baden-Baden, Kirill Petrenko opened the concert with the third overture to the opera, whose plot unfolds in Spain. In an interview with Philharmoniker violist Julia Gartemann, the conductor expresses his admiration for the Impressionism in Joaquín Rodrigo’s famous guitar concerto Concierto de Aranjuez, explains Rimsky-Korsakov’s fascination with Spanish-Oriental colouring, looks back on the Beethoven anniversary, and shares his wishes for 2021.
