Klaus Mäkelä and Yunchan Lim
Early in his career, Yunchan Lim, who is making his debut here with the Berliner Philharmoniker, has already impressed audiences many times with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 4 – particularly because he brings out an unusual richness of expressive nuance in the piece. Klaus Mäkelä also conducts Sibelius’s last completed symphony: a dark, primal work which – in the conductor’s words, “is held together by a single, sweeping breath”. The concert opens with a new work by Thomas Larcher.
