Alan Gilbert and Isabelle Faust
Alan Gilbert describes Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony as a “musical autobiography”. It is said to reflect both his love for his wife Clara and his musical idol Johann Sebastian Bach. Brett Dean’s violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing nostalgically evokes a world in which people still wrote letters to one another. The Composer in Residence calls it a “rather tricky piece” – tailor-made for Isabelle Faust’s seemingly boundless virtuosity.
