Yuja Wang in conversation with Andreas Ottensamer (16 min.)
For years, audiences and critics have raved about Yuja Wang, about the extreme virtuosity and unusual sense of timbre the Chinese pianist possesses. It was therefore only a matter of time before she was invited to perform with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and in May 2015, the moment had come: Under the direction of Paavo Järvi, the young artist made her debut with the orchestra in Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, one of the most technically demanding works in the repertoire. To mark the performance, she was interviewed by Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinet with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2011. Yuja Wang talks about the beginnings of her musical training, her love of chamber music and her view of Prokofiev’s G minor Concerto, which despite all its spectacular aspects is marked by a rather sombre expression.
