Alan Gilbert in conversation with Andreas Ottensamer (18 min.)

Alan Gilbert performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time in 2006, and he has returned to the orchestra on a regular basis since then with an unusually versatile repertoire. When, in December 2016, he conducted works by John Adams, Béla Bartók and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony in Berlin, he was in his final season as chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Together with Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinet with the Berliner Philharmonker and, like Gilbert, also from a family of musicians, the conductor discusses his successful eight-year term of office in his home town, his work with the Berliner Philharmoniker, his artistic friendship with Frank Peter Zimmermann – the soloist in this concert – and his desire to conduct more operas again in the future.
