Seong-Jin Cho in conversation with Marlene Ito (14 min.)
The Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle had planned a series of concerts with Lang Lang for appearances in Berlin and on a major Asian tour in the winter of 2017. However, the global piano star was forced to cancel due to illness. This led to the Philharmoniker debut of the young South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho, whose spectacular career was launched after winning the prestigious International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2015. In this interview with the Philharmoniker’s violinist Marlene Ito, Seoul-Jin Cho talks about his first appearance in Berlin where the young artist now lives, about the challenges of Maurice Ravel’s G major Piano Concerto which he played at his debut, and the differences between the behaviour of European and Asian audiences.
