Teodor Currentzis in conversation with Sarah Willis (22 min.)
Teodor Currentzis is regarded as one of the most exciting and idiosyncratic conductors of the classical music world. With the choir and orchestra ensemble musicAeterna – founded by Currentzis in Perm in Siberia – he has caused an international sensation. In 2018, he also took over the position of chief conductor of the SWR Symphonieorchester. Currentzis made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in the winter of 2019 with Verdi’s Requiem. To mark this occasion, he met with Philharmoniker horn player Sarah Willis for an interview. Here he explains why musicians have to deal responsibly with the attention given to them by the audience, and why a pianissimo is not an indication of volume, but “playing with silence”. According to Currentzis, the perfect world would be a spiritual one without politicians or conductors.
