Gil Shaham in conversation with Julia Gartemann (16 min.)
The Israeli-American violinist Gil Shaham made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1988 when he was 17, and since then he has returned to play with the orchestra on many occasions. He has had an even longer connection with Zubin Mehta with whom he performed as an 11-year-old prodigy. So it was a well-rehearsed ensemble which performed Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto in September 2015. With Julia Gartemann, violist with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Shaham talks about his Stradivarius, how much he enjoys playing with the Philharmoniker, and the ingenuity of Korngold, who became a multiple Academy Award-winning composer of Hollywood soundtracks after emigrating to the United States.
