Craig Urquhart in conversation with Noah Bendix-Balgley (5 min.)

As a conductor and composer, pianist, political activist and tireless music educator, Leonard Bernstein was a leading figure of the 20th century. The American composer Craig Urquhart was the artist’s assistant for a few years and later assumed the position of senior consultant at the Leonard Bernstein Office. At the New Year’s Eve concert at the end of 2019, the Berliner Philharmoniker – with whom Bernstein realized his only concert programme as conductor in 1979 – presented works which included music from West Side Story. To mark the occasion, Craig Urquhart and the Philharmoniker’s first concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley met for a chat. Urquhart talks about his personal memories of Bernstein and reveals the secret of his tremendous productivity: “He never slept.”
