Elīna Garanča in conversation with Julia Gartemann (15 min.)
A large number of globally successful musicians comes from the small nation of Latvia. They include conductor Andris Nelsons, violinist Baiba Skride and mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, who enjoys success both on the opera stage and in the concert hall. She made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2009 and has also appeared several times with the orchestra at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. At the beginning of March 2020, she was the soloist in Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony under the direction of Lorenzo Viotti. In this interview with violist Julia Gartemann, who has been a member of the Philharmoniker since 2000, the singer explains what the work means to her. Elīna Garanča also relates the fact that her home country has as many folk songs as inhabitants, and talks about lessons with her own mother and her passion for musicals.
